Spiritual Cowboy, 4_11_2020, 2:22p.m. Purple silk thread, red embroidery floss and my Czech grandmothers marigold embroidery floss on buddha textile bought in Bali, Indonesia 2018. 17 3/4” x 19 1/4”.
The artist creator of this original depiction of the Buddha textile is unknown. It was created in Bali, Indonesia and was purchased by Laurie M. on her first research trip to Indonesia in 2018. Originally it hung in her mediation room and she had no intention of making it into a work. That she considered sacrilege, disrespectful. Her original opinion shifted on March 3rd, 2020 when she was speaking with an artist confidant in Indonesia whom she respects deeply. Spiritual Cowboy arose from her conscious in that moment of conversation and it made so much sense, the choice of textile to use.

Beloved for Chloe Ardelia Wofford (Toni Morrison)
Natural linen bookbinding thread, purple silk thread on white linen, 55" x 65", 8_7_2019, 4:38 p.m.
Laurie M. started Beloved first with the linen bookbinding thread on “loved”. A power and strength was apparent as she worked on each stitch with the thread. Completing “loved” in a bold manner and completing the work by embroidering “be” in delicately fragile purple silk embroidery floss. Both colors symbolic of pure light and intuition and a cosmic awareness. Her radiance is ethereal.
Laurie M. attended the PEN World Voices Festival at The Cooper Union Great Hall in 2010 specifically to hear Toni Morrison. She was speechless that she was sitting feet away hearing her speak. Afterwards getting in line to get her autograph on her copy of her acceptance speech of the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished American Letters, awarded her on November 6th, 1996. She didn't want to ask for this autograph, didn't want to ask her for anything as she had already given so much in her words and now lecture shared. Laurie M. was awestruck by her mere presence. Laurie M. was at a loss for words to describe her influence upon her as a woman and as an artist the day she died on September 5, 2019. Laurie M. carries her within.
Natural linen thread on translucent cream linen, home made curtain, 57 1/2" x 108", 1_21_2018, 9:14 a.m.
Laurie M. passed a kidney stone on the morning of January twenty first, 2018. Possibly the by product of the worst pain she had ever experienced in her life the previous week. With its passing came no pain. Laurie M. had been wanting to embroider APONIA on a large piece of linen she had made into a curtain for the east window in her meditation room. She embroidered it in the morning after completing her other morning rituals. For the first time she used a natural linen thread to embroider with that she had discovered on 125th St. in NYC and was delighted with the delicate and lyrical quality of each stitch.

MAGICAL JOY (tribute to Mycologist Gary Lincoff (mentor to Laurie M.) who died on 3_16_2018), 4:23 p.m.
Blue embroidery floss on dark blue linen, 40” 1/4’ x 26” 1/4’, 4:23 p.m.
Laurie M. wanted to pay tribute to her mycology mentor Gary Lincoff upon hearing of his untimely death. MAGICAL JOY seemed to encapsulate all she felt about Gary and the forays she enjoyed going on with him as part of the New York Mycological Society. She embroidered it the day of his service at Woodlawn Cemetery on 3_19_2018. He had a profound effect on Laurie M. as a person, he was the true embodiment of both words.
Grandma's Eleanore’s purple embroidery floss on dark blue linen, 41" 1/2' x 24", 5_10_2018-6_1_2018, 11:43 a.m.
Laurie M. had a profoundly powerful conversation with someone she cares deeply for on May, 10th, 2018. She acknowledged that person for their purity, and said she had not encountered that quality revealed in someone she cared for up to that point in her life. Laurie M. believes fundamentally that all beings are pure and full of light. Some are aware of their light and others are not.
WONDER The first in a series of word works directly related to JOY.
